12 in 21 – March 2021 – 2 of 4

Working With Film is the March 2021 installment of ’12 in 21’, a year-long series of month-long art/photography projects. It is an opportunity to delve into projects and interests usually pushed to the side. Most of the work is analog based. Visually, there is no set agenda, just energetic exploration allowing the process to inform and inspire. In this series I am working with old transparencies and negatives, mostly mine, mostly from old stock photo files. There is a smattering of ‘found film’ throughout… I am physically shredding film, using a hole punch, painting, freezing them in ice, and sandwiching between glass then smacking with a hammer, among other things. Jolly good fun! I am reassembling the scraps, then digitally scanning or re-photographing. There is minimal Photoshop. This is the 2nd of 4 installments for this project. Thanks for looking and please subscribe!

12 in 21 – February 2021

MICRO-MACRO is the February 2021 installment of ’12 in 21’, a year-long series of month-long art/photography projects. It is an opportunity to delve into interests and projects usually pushed to the side. Most of the work is analog based. Visually, there is no set agenda, just energetic exploration allowing the process to inform and inspire. For this project I had intended to photograph a wide range of subject/objects with close-up cameras and lenses, but decided to over-explore one subject… In the early 80’s I purchased a couple of boxes of impossibly tiny adorable nails, some shorter that 1/4″.  They appeared handmade, each one different. Could never figure out what they were for, perhaps shoemaking. I gave a box to my mother, who strangely appreciated them, and I’ve probably used 1 nail a year since then….

The Destroyed Prince Macro is the January 2021 installment of 12 in 21, a year-long series of month-long art/photography projects. It is an opportunity to delve into interests and projects usually pushed to the side. Most of the work is analog based. Visually there is no set agenda, just energetic exploration allowing the process to inform and inspire. For this particular project I am turning a sows ear into a silk purse: taking detailed macro photographs of the surface of a series of my old color collage prints that were recently damaged in a classic NYC apartment leak…

September 11, 2019

September 11, 2019 – Here is a series of photo collage images of the World Trade Center towers, from 1979 to about 2000. Some are my own fine art concepts, some are sketches, and some are from corporate/advertising jobs.

I do miss those buildings.

I know what you’re saying: Dave, where’s the new art? I guess I’m taking a break. Art making is sorta hard. Making time for making art is even harder. Justifying making art at all is nigh impossible. However, I have random lists of names for as-yet uncreated collages squirreled away. Looking at them now, I’m vaguely inspired to make some art to fit these names. Putting the cart before the horse? So sue me. Most of these probably wouldn’t actually get used anyway. And should anyone need further proof as to why artists should avoid writing and stick to the visual….
